The Gene Technology Act 2000 aims to protect the health and safety of people, and the environment, by identifying risks posed by or as a result of gene technology, and by managing those risks through regulating certain dealings with genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

The Gene Technology Act 2000 regulates dealings with GMOs.

Other agencies within the Australian regulatory framework regulate certain GM products. Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) regulates GM food sold for human consumption, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) regulates human therapeutics, the Australian Pesticides & Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) regulates agricultural chemicals and veterinary medicines.
